"Disappointing Performance" 2007-03-14
By Ashish Gupta (New York, NY)
Hi All: I think it is necessary for us to share our experiences if we receive disappointing performance by these products since these are high value items and a lot of thought and money goes into buying them.
I loved the Samsung performance when I saw it first and initially bought Samsung LNS3241D. It worked great but only for a month, and suddenly started giving problem in scenes shot in darkness. Normally, the brightness kept on adjusting making the picture bright and dark continuously; and over time this problem became worse. Samsung's technician confirmed the problem and promised it was unrepairable and that company would exchange.
After haggling with Samsung for 5 months, they exchanged the TV and gave me Samsung LNS3291D. I was too happy (even though they tested my patience for 5 months) to receive a new TV in replacement and its performance was even better. The colors were amazing and picture crystal clear. Two months passed by and suddenly it started giving the same problem, even more ACUTE than the previous one. Some scenes in a movie would be absolutely hazy, even on high definition. With the continious dimming and brightening of the screen. There are white and greige patches all over the screen now. I have informed them of the problem and am waiting for a resolution.
Now I realize this is a problem across all Samsung LCD TV's, Less in some case and more in others. ITS A GENERIC PROBLEM, and is HIGHLY ANNOYING. Its lesser in the beginning and grows over time. Though the TV had great colors, but my satisfaction level due to the above defect was close to zero. Samsung are the best LCD's but even they suck. Worse is that you dont realize this problem when you buy it but after a couple of months, when sellers are reluctant to exchange or refund the money.
A few things to remember: Samsung will not replace the TV if it is not unrepairable. And they would make you beg for helping you out.
Secondly, apart from the above problem, I think Samsung TV's do not have the best refresh rate to enjoy a game. This was lesser of a problem for me. But compared to Plasma's this is the biggest downfall for an LCD.
Final recommendation: Dont buy LCD's, do yourself a favor, put some extra money and get a PLASMA.

"Buyer Beware" 2007-03-09

A month ago, I bought this Samsung lcd hdtv. Since then, I have heard an intermittent vibrating sound with certain tones during some programs. This is a great distraction, and one program was so "infected" with vibrations, I could barely understand what the commentator was saying. I called Samsung and spent more than an hour and a half on the phone to no avail. Of course the tv is still under warranty, but the tech person (and the supervisor) are threatening to charge me for repairs. And I bought the tv from Amazon A MONTH AGO! The tech person was an idiot, having me and unplug and replug just about every connection on the back of the tv and receiver, and told me to completely remove some cables, which caused NO PICTURE. Then it took her 20 minutes (TWICE) to try to figure out how to restore the picture. Of course, the problem is with the sound, not the picture, but the tech people at Samsung haven't figured that out. The basic conclusion of Samsung is that the problem is probably with the DirecTV dvr, even though I had no problems with the sound on my old tv using the same box. Samsung says that if they send someone out and can't find anything wrong with the tv, I will be charged for the service call. Basically, Samsung is going to investigate itself and if it's their "perception" the tv is okay, I have to pay. Of course, Samsung will say everything's fine with the sound: (1) The problem is intermittent (2) They will refuse to repair the tv, blaming DirecTV as they already have and (3) The company probably will make money on the service call. I will NEVER buy another Samsung product again.

"WOW - what a picture !" 2007-02-19

I'm watching "over the air" broadcast HDTV using a Terk HDTVi antenna. The picture quality on this TV is nothing short of amazing. CSI, local news - they seem to be almost surreal in their color, brightness and clarity ( no, it's not a diamond, but it's close ).
The size is nearly perfect for my bedroom, but 37" would be nicer. The 40" set is pricey and maybe too big.
I do not regret this purchase ONE iota. I observed another 32" Sammy - one step below this at Best Buy (4000 contrast ratio) and thought it was the nicest picture in the store. Then I saw this unit at another Big Box store and bought it (after some strong negotiating with Mr. "Gregg").
I haven't tried DVD (upconverting or otherwise) yet, but I'm thinking I might not even need the upconverting. I'll try my progressive scan DVD later and update this post.
Good luck. I researched this purchase a lot - I really wanted a 37" set - but got this because of it's quality. It comes really really close to the Sony in picture qualilty at a MUCH lower price tag.

"Great Bang For Your Buck" 2007-01-31
By D. Dyte (Brooklyn, NY USA)
Regular tv looks good, HD looks fantastic, regular DVDs are far better than I expected- I don't think I'll be needing an upconverting player.
Switching between sources is simple and easy with all the various inputs provided, unlike our previous setup which required me to write the rest of the world an instruction manual on how I'd wired it all together.
The built in speakers sound a little thinner than our stereo, but the effect is minimal.
Very happy with this purchase.

"GREAT TV, but no full-screen HDMI (why not?)" 2007-01-23
By A. de Bussy (Bay Area, CA)
Great TV, trustworthy delivery, excellent performance all around, EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. WHY NO FULL-SCREEN HDMI? One can expand the HDMI signal to encompass the full screen, but not at full resolution, and it doesn't occur automatically. The result is that regular DVDs do not have the full resolution one would expect, even if upconverted.
Otherwise, monitor is amazingly bright and accurate, and good for any apartment and small living room. I cannot tell the difference between 720p and 1080p for 32" unless I am 3-4 feet away, so don't bother with the 3251D model unless you just like to throw your money in the toilet.
I'm a bit picky about audio, so I don't bother with the monitor's speakers and use my superior bookshelf speakers instead.
Dynamic brightness make a subtle but meaningful difference.
Lots of inputs/outputs, so you will have enough options unless you are looking to super-accessorize. If so, you might be better off getting a larger TV anyway.
